Valley of Dreams Trailhead Photos: Stunning New Mexico Landscapes
If you love unique landscapes that feel out of this world, Valley of Dreams Trailhead Photos in New Mexico is a must-visit destination. I discovered this magical place while planning a trip for the annular eclipse, and it instantly became one of my favorite spots in the American Southwest.
From surreal hoodoos to the world-famous Alien Throne, this area offers otherworldly scenery, incredible photo opportunities, and a sense of adventure that’s hard to match anywhere else.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to get there, how to find Alien Throne, what other formations to explore, tips for hiking safely, and nearby places to stay and eat. By the end, you’ll know exactly how to plan your visit and make the most of this stunning corner of the San Juan Basin.

What is Valley of Dreams, New Mexico?
Valley of Dreams is a remote expanse of northwestern New Mexico badlands shaped over millions of years by wind and rain. The area is scattered with hoodoos, strange rock formations, and surreal landscapes that feel almost extraterrestrial. Some of the formations even have playful names like Three Wise Men, Giant Mushroom, Chocolate Penguin King, and Red Dinosaur Egg, sparking your imagination as you wander through.
The star attraction, of course, is Alien Throne, a towering hoodoo with a hollowed base shaped by natural erosion. Though it’s not technically part of the Bisti Badlands, it’s nearby and equally mesmerizing. The Southwest USA is full of breathtaking landscapes, but this hidden gem stands out as a bucket-list destination for any landscape lover or photographer.

How to Get to Valley of Dreams?
The nearest city to Valley of Dreams is Farmington, New Mexico. While you could do a long day trip from Albuquerque, staying in Farmington gives you more flexibility to explore the area at your own pace.
Vehicle Recommendations
I highly recommend a 4-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle, especially if you want to park closer to the formations. While I did see someone navigate the dirt roads in a rental Dodge Charger, it’s safer to use a proper off-road vehicle because the unpaved roads can be deep, sandy, and rutted, especially after rain.
Keep your eyes peeled for wild horses along the dirt roads—they sometimes block the path but add a magical touch to the journey.
Directions from Farmington
- Head south on NM-371.
- Turn left onto County Road 7650, an unpaved road.
- After 7.8 miles, turn right on 7870.
- Drive 8.3 miles before making a sharp left onto an unmarked dirt road (Google Maps: Valley of Dreams Trailhead is helpful).
- About a mile down, you’ll find several dirt roads to the left leading to a parking lot with views of the Valley.
For those with a high-clearance 4×4, continue past the livestock pen and turn left to park closer to the formations. GPS coordinates for this turn: 36.1413654, -107.9695749.

How to Find Alien Throne Rock?
The hike to Alien Throne is manageable for most hikers, about 2.25 miles roundtrip according to my Garmin. While AllTrails is accurate, I recommend chatting with locals—they often know shortcuts and social trails that make it easier to reach Alien Throne.
Location
Alien Throne sits at the north end of the Valley of Dreams near the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness. Part of the hike passes through Navajo tribal lands, so respect boundaries and signage. Its exact coordinates are: 36.1488000, -107.9806000.
The formation remains hidden until you’re close, giving you a sense of discovery as you approach. When I finally stood before it, the sheer scale and unique erosion left me speechless—even in harsh midday light, it was otherworldly.
Alien Throne Hike Experience
Parking at the main trailhead requires a short hike down to the valley, while parking closer means just a small climb over a hill to access the hoodoos. There are no official marked trails, so wandering and exploring is part of the fun.
I followed a shortcut suggested by locals—a wildlife trail leading straight to Alien Throne. Seeing it up close for the first time was surreal. Even in the bright sun, the sculpted holes at the base and the dramatic landscape surrounding it made it feel like stepping onto another planet.
This area is also fantastic for astrophotography, with minimal light pollution. Capturing the Milky Way over Alien Throne is on my bucket list for the next visit.
Other Formations to Explore

Whether you use AllTrails or simply wander off the beaten path, every corner offers new shapes, colors, and textures. Exploration is part of the charm, as not all formations are clearly marked or easy to find.
